What areas can we treat with CO2 Fractional Resurfacing?

The face and neck are the obvious areas that the SmartSkin laser targets, but any area of the body with these skin conditions can benefit. The chest, hands, and arms are areas that are frequently sun damaged, and the SmartSkin laser can make a dramatic improvement by removing much of the unwanted pigment and age spots, and smoothing the texture of the skin. We can also break down the face into smaller areas such as around the eyes or around the mouth.

Although it is not comparable to the effects of a surgical facelift on lifting and tightening skin, there will also be some tightening of the facial and neck skin. Depending on your age and skin condition, this alone can be dramatic. The transformation that the SmartSkin Micro Ablative laser can achieve could take years off of your appearance.

Scars cannot be eliminated completely, but can be improved with the SmartSkin Micro Ablative CO2 Laser. Even established acne scars and stretch marks can be improved; expectations have to be tempered, but any improvement is generally welcomed in these very difficult problems.

Although the improvements to pigmentation and fine wrinkles will be seen almost immediately, the SmartSkin CO2 laser procedure will continue to improve your skin over the next several months. This is because the SmartSkin CO2 also stimulates neocollagenesis, which means that the skin will be prompted to produce more collagen, a process that begins within 30 days of the procedure. This added collagen causes the skin to be thicker, which makes it appear more youthful.

Facial rejuvenation surgery doesn’t address sun damage or textural changes to the skin, nor does it stimulate skin thickening by neocollagenesis. These aspects of facial aging are often ignored when patients consider facial surgery. The best approach when considering facial surgery is to consider also treating those problems in a comprehensive way. The Smartskin Micro Ablative Laser is the answer. Braodband Light (BBL) and proper skin care are also valuable adjuncts to rejuvenation. You will meet with our esthetician, and an aftercare prhttps://wellmedicalarts.com/ipl/ogram and skin care products will be included with your SmartSkin Micro Ablative CO2 Laser procedure.

One treatment can give you awesome results.

Fractional CO2 resurfacing is usually a one-time treatment performed with topical or local anesthesia. It provides skin resurfacing for improvement in wrinkles, scarring, discoloration and some skin tightening by stimulating collagen production. Recovery varies depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment. People frequently have it done on a Thursday or Friday and are able to return to work Monday (although may be still pink or swollen). You’ll need to take some preventive prescriptions and follow specific skin-care instructions. Immediately after, your skin will be raw and oozing, and covered in ointment. Crusts will form, then peel, and the healing skin beneath will be pink, sensitive and itchy. Although the skin heals within a few weeks, redness can persist for about two or three months. Once you have fully healed you should notice a significant improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, scars, skin laxity and discoloration.

Less downtime

In the past, traditional carbon dioxide laser treatments removed the entire surface of the skin. The down time was longer and it had higher riskes of adverse effects such as infection or hypopigmentation (lightening of skin).  Newer CO2 Fractional resurfacing uses small columns of fractionated light and energy to penetrate the dermis. It’s like poking tiny holes in the skin with light and heat. The surrounding healthy skin promotes healing, making new collagen and elastin. We can contol how far away the holes are, this gives less down time (and results) or we can bring them closer together for a more aggessive treatment. We can contol how deep the columns penetrate and how much energy or heat goes into them. This provides us with a variety of settings for different results. By targeting zones deep in the skin and increasing heat we get more skin tightening.  Using less heat and bringing columns closer together we remove superficial pigment and textural issues. We can also layer and combine the techniques for all effects. Wow! We can do an entire face, face and neck and decolete, or target just the eyes or around the mouth. You may hear the term Madonna lift, this is referring to skin rejuvination, resurfacing and tightening around the eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions about Co2 Fractional Resurfacing

How does the SmartSkin Fractional C02 Laser System work?

The SmartSkin Fractional CO2 Laser System delivers a series of tiny microscopic laser beams to the skin. This fractionated energy penetrates the skin, which helps to clear away old and damaged skin cells. The body’s natural healing process then builds new healthy cells to take their place. The laser also stimulates the production of new collagen deep within your skin, giving you a more youthful looking appearance.

How many CO2 resurfacing treatments will I need?

Typically, only one treatment is needed for desired results. However, since the treatments can be adjusted to your cosmetic and downtime needs, you can also opt for two or three “lighter” treatments. We can help you determine which course of treatment will work best for you and your individual needs during your consultation.

What does a CO2 Resufacing procedure feel like?

We apply a topical numbing anesthetic to your skin prior to the procedure and also offer medications to help reduce discomfort during your treatment. We also use a chiller to cool the treatment area during the procedure, which makes the treatment more comfortable.

How long will the results from a CO2 Resurfacing procedure last?

With proper skin care, protection, and maintenance, results often last many years.

What should I expect immediately following treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, your skin will feel warm and appear to be sunburned. You may experience pinpoint bleeding and swelling, which is completely normal. Your body naturally starts working by replacing the aged skin cells with new ones. The “downtime” will vary depending on the settings used, which will be determined taking into account your cosmetic expectations and downtime needs. Over time, collagen will regenerate and restore the supporting structure of your skin, giving you the smooth skin you are looking for. This process can take up to 6 months, and your skin will continue to improve during this time period.

When can I resume my daily activities?

Since the SmartSkin Fractional CO2 Laser delivers micro pulses of energy into the skin, you will experience a significantly shorter recovery time than with fully ablative lasers. Each tiny hole will quickly heal, and in a few days you can return to your normal lifestyle and patients are often completely healed in 7-12 days. Treatments are adjustable, so your downtime will depend on the treatment you receive. Areas where the skin is more delicate (neck, chest and hands) may take about an extra week or two to fully heal.

What are the risks?

Fractional skin resurfacing with the SmartSkin CO2 has a faster recovery and has fewer side effects when compared to fully ablative resurfacing. Treatments are generally well tolerated. During your consultation, we will explain any potential risks and help you minimize them based on your complete medical and skin history.

How much does a CO2 Fractional Resufacing treatment cost?

SmartSkin is unique in that the system allows us to tailor the treatments to your needs. You may opt for 2 or 3 “lighter” treatments with very good outcomes and limited downtime, or you may want a single treatment that has a slightly longer downtime but outstanding results. During your consultation we will work with you to determine your treatment plan and discuss the cost of the treatment with you.
